Sarah Garland was born and raised in Christchurch. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Painting, both from the University of Canterbury, and a Post-Grad teaching diploma from NZGSE. She works exclusively in oils and paints mostly figurative works, subjects drawn from family and friends' photographs.
The body is the enduring feature of her work, whether shown in full, cropped or suggested by its absence. Elements are depicted representationally but line and contour is exaggerated, and colour amplified. Sarah is married with school-age children, and practises from her garden studio.
She put down her paintbrush upon graduating, to start a family and manage the after-effects of the Christchurch quakes. However she has been busy over the last couple of years participating in several major exhibitions. She is currently working towards another, at Chambers Gallery, mid-year 2020.
